Survey raises concerns about long-term career prospects for developers

A new union survey raises concerns about the longevity of careers in games development, with less than half managing to last more than seven years in the field.

As reported by IGN, the entertainment union known as the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) collected data from hundreds of AAA, mobile, and indie developers between March and mid-August 2023. 57% of those surveyed said they most recently worked on a AAA game.

IATE's 2023 Gameworkers.org Rates and Conditions survey showed that the average years of industry experience among developers was 6.9 years, with less than half of respondents making it to their seventh year.
